Team Coaching is a form of leadership coaching where members undertake focused learning to become more aware of self and others. The process also identifies which relationships require repair in order for the team to proceed in a more effective, rewarding fashion.
The team coaching process is designed to shift focus to the positive, find what the group has in common that holds potential and elevate what team members are grateful for regarding other members.
Rules of Engagement and shared vision, mission and goals are key platforms that need to either be co-created or tested to see if they are working for a team. Team coaching deciphers which modifications to these instruments are necessary.
The Adult Stage of Development tool may be used to shed light on individual team members’ levels of adult meaning-making. A half-day training with a subject-matter expert reveals to the individual how he or she sees the world and how team members do, and then how to best proceed given the team’s makeup and preferences. Sessions are held with the team and leadership coach, allowing for observation and better understanding of how the team is run and what dynamics are at play.
Equipping the team with proper “Speech Acts” around Requests, Declarations, Assessments and Assertions ensures language is non-threatening and fosters a healthy team dynamic on a day-to-day basis.
Where past incidents existed between team members and perhaps their leader, facilitation and mediation occur to work toward apologies and requests from the involved parties in order to move forward without resentment. Conflict management tools and training are offered to minimize or avoid future setbacks to the team.
Team coaching facilitates co-creation of the team development plan and provides overall analysis of strengths and opportunities going forward.
The coaching process ensures the Rules of Engagement developed in partnership with the team are being practiced and establishes the protocol for calling a “time out” when things go off track to course-correct, as needed.
